Academic researchers typically focus efforts on grand challenges that are five to ten years from having an impact on society. However, in the face of a global pandemic, members of academia and industry came together to quickly solve shortages in personal protective equipment (PPE) and in life-saving medical instrumentation. One example is in the area of disinfection methods. Previous research had shown the effectiveness of UV-C as a disinfection method for a range of bacteria and viruses, including coronaviruses. As such, due to its universal-nature, the use of UV-C in a healthcare setting began to increase in 2018 due to the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria, but the approach became more well-known during the current COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation will discuss a recently developed, constructed, and validated portable UV-C disinfection system built from readily accessible components. In addition, recent results from a semi-autonomous UV-C system may be discussed.

Low-Cost Portable UV-C Systems - Andrea M. Armani

The aim of ESSCIRC and ESSDERC is to provide an annual European forum for the presentation and discussion of recent advances in solid-state devices and circuits.
The level of integration for system-on-chip design is rapidly increasing.

This is made available by advances in semiconductor technology. Therefore, more than ever before, a deeper interaction among technologists, device experts, IC designers, and system designers is necessary. ESSCIRC and ESSDERC are governed by a common Steering Committee and share Plenary Keynote Presentations and Joint Sessions bridging both device and circuit communities.

Highlights:
* 3 joint keynote presentations
* 3 keynote presentations ESSCIRC
* 3 keynote presentations ESSDERC
* Invited papers with overall coverage of all aspects of advanced devices and circuits
* Presentation of IEEE and ESSCIRC/ESSDERC Awards
* Educational Events

Photonics plays an important role in coronavirus detection as well as clinical diagnosis and therapy of COVID-19 and its complications via optical sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging. For example, infrared thermography can produce a thermal map of the human skin in real time and find potentially infected persons at airports and on the street, while nanophotonic biosensors based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering can sensitively identify viruses in airborne aerosols. Moreover, photonics is an essential part of PCR testing (for diagnosis of the coronavirus) and flow cytometry (for evaluating treatment effectiveness) via fluorescence detection. This virtual symposium provides a valuable forum for researchers to share their novel findings and discuss challenges and potential solutions. Speakers and participants are encouraged to submit to the APL Photonics special topic on [Coronavirus and Photonics](https://publishing.aip.org/publications/journals/special-topics/app/coronavirus-and-photonics/) to continue the conversation.
