Few-shot Learning (FSL) which aims to learn from few labeled training data is becoming a popular research topic, due to the expensive labeling cost in many real-world applications. One kind of successful FSL method learns to compare the testing (query) image and training (support) image by simply concatenating the features of two images and feeding it into the neural network. However, with few labeled data in each class, the neural network has difficulty in learning or comparing the local features of two images. Such simple image-level comparison may cause serious mis-classification. To solve this problem, we propose Augmented Bi-path Network (ABNet) for learning to compare both global and local features on multi-scales. Specifically, the salient patches are extracted and embedded as the local features for every image. Then, the model learns to augment the features for better robustness. Finally, the model learns to compare global and local features separately, i.e., in two paths, before merging the similarities. Extensive experiments show that the proposed ABNet outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Both quantitative and visual ablation studies are provided to verify that the proposed modules lead to more precise comparison results.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

Instance segmentation and panoptic segmentation
is being paid more and more attention in recent years. In
comparison with bounding box based object detection and
semantic segmentation, instance segmentation can provide more
analytical results at pixel level. Given the insight that pixels
belonging to one instance have one or more common attributes of
current instance, we bring up an one-stage instance segmentation
network named Common Attribute Support Network (CASNet),
which realizes instance segmentation by predicting and clustering
common attributes. CASNet is designed in the manner of fully
convolutional and can implement training and inference from
end to end. And CASNet manages predicting the instance
without overlaps and holes, which problem exists in most of
current instance segmentation algorithms. Furthermore, it can
be easily extended to panoptic segmentation through minor
modifications with little computation overhead. CASNet builds a
bridge between semantic and instance segmentation from finding
pixel class ID to obtaining class and instance ID by operations
on common attribute. Through experiment for instance and
panoptic segmentation, CASNet gets mAP 32.8% and PQ 59.0%
on Cityscapes validation dataset by joint training, and mAP
36.3% and PQ 66.1% by separated training mode. For panoptic
segmentation, CASNet gets state-of-the-art performance on the
Cityscapes validation dataset

CASNet: Common Attribute Support Network for image instance and panoptic segmentation

In unsupervised feature learning, sample specificity based methods ignore the inter-class information, which deteriorates the discriminative capability of representation models. Clustering based methods are error-prone to explore the complete class boundary information due to the inevitable class inconsistent samples in each cluster. In this work, we propose a novel clustering based method, which, by iteratively excluding class inconsistent samples during progressive cluster formation, alleviates the impact of noise samples in a simple-yet-effective manner. Our approach, referred to as Progressive Cluster Purification (PCP), implements progressive clustering by gradually reducing the number of clusters during training, while the sizes of clusters continuously expand consistently with the growth of model representation capability. With a well-designed cluster purification mechanism, it further purifies clusters by filtering noise samples which facilitate the subsequent feature learning by utilizing the refined clusters as pseudo-labels. Experiments on commonly used benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed PCP improves baseline method with significant margins.

Progressive Cluster Purification for Unsupervised Feature Learning


Undersampled reconstruction in resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) holds the potential to enable higher spatial resolution in brain R-fMRI without increasing scan duration. We propose a novel approach to reconstruct k-t undersampled R-fMRI relying on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework. The architecture of our CNN framework comprises a novel scheme for R-fMRI reconstruction that jointly learns two multilayer CNN components for (i) explicitly filling in missing k-space data, using acquired data in frequency-temporal neighborhoods, and (ii) image quality enhancement in the spatiotemporal domain. The architecture sandwiches the Fourier transformation from the frequency domain to the spatial domain between the two aforementioned CNN components, during, both, CNN learning and inference. We propose four methods within our framework, including a Bayesian CNN that produces uncertainty maps indicating the per-voxel (and per-timepoint) confidence in the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) time-series reconstruction. Results on brain R-fMRI show that our CNN framework improves over the state of the art, quantitatively and qualitatively, in terms of the connectivity maps for three cerebral functional networks.

A Bayesian Deep CNN Framework for Reconstructing k-t Undersampled Resting-fMRI

Stress due to water deficiency in plants can significantly lower the agricultural yield. It can affect many visible plant traits such as size and surface area, the number of leaves and their color, etc. In recent years, computer vision-based plant phenomics has emerged as a promising tool for plant research and management. Such techniques have the advantage of being non-destructive, non-evasive, fast, and offer high levels of automation. Pulses like chickpeas play an important role in ensuring food security in poor countries owing to their high protein and nutrition content. In the present work, we have built a dataset comprising of two varieties of chickpea plant shoot images under different moisture stress conditions. Specifically, we propose a BAT optimized ResNet-18 model for classifying stress induced by water deficiency using chickpea shoot images. BAT algorithm identifies the optimal value of the mini-batch size to be used for training rather than employing the traditional manual approach of trial and error. Experimentation on two crop varieties (JG and Pusa) reveals that BAT optimized approach achieves an accuracy of 96% and 91% for JG and Pusa varieties that is better than the traditional method by 4%. The experimental results are also compared with state of the art CNN models like Alexnet, GoogleNet, and ResNet-50. The comparison results demonstrate that the proposed BAT optimized ResNet-18 model achieves higher performance than the comparison counterparts.

BAT optimized CNN model identifies Water Stress in Chickpea Plant Shoot Images

We propose a novel environment exploration task based on DRL, which requires a robot fast and completely perceives all objects of interest, and reconstructs their poses in a global environment map, as much as the robot can do. To this end, we design an auxiliary task aided DRL model, which is integrated with the auxiliary object detection and 6-DoF pose estimation components. The outcome of auxiliary tasks can improve the learning speed and robustness of DRL, as well as the accuracy of object pose estimation. Comprehensive experimental results on the indoor simulation platform AI2-THOR have shown the effectiveness and robustness of our method.

Object-oriented Map Exploration and Construction Based on Auxiliary Task Aided DRL

Applying Global Self-attention (GSA) mechanism over features has achieved remarkable success on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). However, it is not clear if Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) can similarly benefit from such a technique. In this work, inspired by the similarity between CNNs and GCNs, we study the impact of the Global Self-attention mechanism on GCNs. We find that consistent with the intuition, the GSA mechanism allows GCNs to capture feature-based vertex relations regardless of edge connections; As a result, the GSA mechanism can introduce extra expressive power to the GCNs. Furthermore, we analyze the impacts of the GSA mechanism on the issues of overfitting and over-smoothing. We prove that the GSA mechanism can alleviate both the overfitting and the over-smoothing issues based on some recent technical developments. Experiments on multiple benchmark datasets illustrate both superior expressive power and less significant overfitting and over-smoothing problems for the GSA-augmented GCNs, which corroborate the intuitions and the theoretical results.

On the Global Self-attention Mechanism for Graph Convolutional Networks

Designing fonts for languages with a large number of characters, such as Japanese and Chinese, is an extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming task. In this study, we addressed the problem of automatically generating Japanese typographic fonts from only a few font samples, where the synthesized glyphs are expected to have coherent characteristics, such as skeletons, contours, and serifs. Existing methods often fail to generate fine glyph images when the number of style reference glyphs is extremely limited. Herein, we proposed a simple but powerful framework for extracting better style features. This framework introduces deep metric learning to style encoders. We performed experiments using black-and-white and shape- distinctive font datasets and demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Few-Shot Font Generation with Deep Metric Learning

Coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (CASSI) captures a full frame spectral image as a single compressive image and is mandatory to reconstruct the underlying hyperspectral image (HSI) from the snapshot as the post-processing, which is a challenge inverse problem due to its ill-posed nature. Existing methods for HSI reconstruction from a snapshot usually employs optimization for solving the formulated image degradation model regularized with the empirically designed priors, and still cannot achieve enough reconstruction accuracy for real HS image analysis systems. Motivated by the recent advances of deep learning for different inverse problems, deep learning based HSI reconstruction method has attracted a lot of attention and can boost the reconstruction performance. This study proposes a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based framework for effectively learning the spatial structure and spectral attribute in the underlying HSI with the reciprocal spatial and spectral modules. Further, to adaptively leverage the useful learned feature for better HSI image reconstruction, we integrate residual attention modules into our DCNN via exploring both spatial and spectral attention maps. Experimental results on two benchmark HSI datasets show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative values and visual effects.

Deep Residual Attention Network for Hyperspectral Image Reconstruction

Segmentation of kidney on CT images is critical to computer-assisted surgical planning for kidney interventional therapy. Segmenting kidney manually is impractical in clinical, automatic segmentation is desirable. U-Net has been successful in medical image segmentation and is a promising candidate for the task. However, semantic gap still exists, especially when multiple phase images or multiple center images are involved. In this paper, we proposed an ULBNet to reduce the semantic gap and to improve segmentation performance. The proposed architecture includes new skip connections of local binary convolution (LBC). We also proposed a novel strategy of fast retraining a model for a new task without manually labelling required. We evaluated the network for kidney segmentation on multiple phase CT images. ULBNet resulted in an overall accuracy of 98.0% with comparison to Resunet 97.5%. Specifically, on the plain phase CT images, 98.1% resulted from ULBNet and 97.6% from Resunet; on the corticomedullay phase images, 97.8% from ULBNet and 97.2% from Resunet; on the nephrographic phase images, 97.6% from ULBNet and 97.4% from Resunet; on the excretory phase images, 98.1% from ULBNet and 97.4% from Resunet. The proposed network architecture performs better than Resunet on generalizing to multiple phase images.

Segmenting Kidney on Multiple Phase CT Images using ULBNet

The performance of deep learning models are driven by various parameters but to tune all of them every time, for every given dataset, is a heuristic practice. In this paper, unlike the common practice of decaying the learning rate, we propose a step-wise training strategy where the learning rate and the batch size are tuned based on the dataset size. Here, the given dataset size is progressively increased during the training to boost the network performance without saturating the learning curve, which is seen after certain epochs. We conducted extensive experiments on multiple networks and datasets to validate the proposed training strategy. The experimental results proves our hypothesis that the learning rate, the batch size and the data size are interrelated and can improve the network accuracy if an optimal progressive step-wise training strategy is applied. The proposed strategy also reduces the overall training cost compared to the baseline approach.
