Financial time-series analysis and forecasting have been extensively studied over the past decades, yet still remain as a very challenging research topic. Since the financial market is inherently noisy and stochastic, a majority of financial time-series of interests are non-stationary, and often obtained from different modalities. This property presents great challenges and can significantly affect the performance of the subsequent analysis/forecasting steps. Recently, the Temporal Attention augmented Bilinear Layer (TABL) has shown great performances in tackling financial forecasting problems. In this paper, by taking into account the nature of bilinear projections in TABL networks, we propose Bilinear Normalization (BiN), a simple, yet efficient normalization layer to be incorporated into TABL networks to tackle potential problems posed by non-stationarity and multimodalities in the input series. Our experiments using a large scale Limit Order Book (LOB) consisting of more than 4 million order events show that BiN-TABL outperforms TABL networks using other state-of-the-arts normalization schemes by a large margin.

The 9th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS), the 16h Encontro Nacional de Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (ENIAC), and the 12th Concurso de Teses e Dissertações em Inteligência Artificial e Computacional (CTDIAC) was held from 20 to 23 October, 2020.

BRACIS originated from the combination of the two most important scientific events in Brazil in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI): the Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence - SBIA (22 editions), and the Brazilian Symposium on Neural Networks - SBRN (13 editions). ENIAC is a national forum for researchers, practitioners, educators and students to present and discuss innovations, trends, experiences, developments and work in progress in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence. CTDIAC is a satellite event whose goals are to disseminate and award the best dissertations and theses (MSc and PhDs concluded in Brazilian universities from June 2018 to May 2020) in Artificial and Computational Intelligence areas.

In this year, the Symposium on Knowledge Discovery, Mining and Learning (KDMiLe) will be held in conjunction with BRACIS 2020. This sysposium aims at integrating researchers, practitioners, developers, students and users to present their research results, to discuss ideas, and to exchange techniques, tools, and practical experiences – related to the Data Mining and Machine Learning areas.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program. 


We present a methodology to tackle inverse imaging problems by leveraging the synergistic power of imaging model and deep learning. The premise is that while learning-based techniques have quickly become the methods of choice in various applications, they often ignore the prior knowledge embedded in imaging models. Incorporating the latter has the potential to improve the image estimation. Specifically, we first provide a mathematical basis of using generative adversarial network (GAN) in inverse imaging through considering an optimization framework. Then, we develop the specific architecture that connects the generator and discriminator networks with the imaging model. While this technique can be applied to a variety of problems, from image reconstruction to super-resolution, we take image deblurring as the example here, where we show in detail the implementation and experimental results of what we call the model-based deblurring GAN (MBD-GAN).

MBD-GAN: Model-based image deblurring with a generative adversarial network


Recently, Video super-resolution (VSR) has become more crucial as the resolution of display has been grown. The majority of deep learning-based VSR methods combine the convolutional neural networks (CNN) with motion compensation or alignment module to estimate a high-resolution (HR) frame from low-resolution (LR) frames. However, most of the previous methods deal with the spatial features equally and may result in the misaligned temporal features by the pixel-based motion compensation and alignment module. It can lead to the damaging effect on the accuracy of the estimated HR feature. In this paper, we propose a wavelet attention embedding network (WAEN), including wavelet embedding network (WENet) and attention embedding network (AENet), to fully exploit the spatio-temporal informative features. The WENet is operated as a spatial feature extractor of individual low and high-frequency information based on 2-D Haar discrete wavelet transform. The meaningful temporal feature is extracted in the AENet through utilizing the weighted attention map between frames. Experimental results verify that the proposed method achieves superior performance compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Wavelet Attention Embedding Networks for Video Super-Resolution

In-the-wild human pose estimation has a huge potential for various fields, ranging from animation and action recognition to intention recognition and prediction for autonomous driving. The current state-of-the-art is focused only on RGB and RGB-D approaches for predicting the 3D human pose. However, not using precise LiDAR depth information limits the performance and leads to very inaccurate absolute pose estimation. With LiDAR sensors becoming more affordable and common on robots and autonomous vehicle setups, we propose an end-to-end architecture using RGB and LiDAR to predict the absolute 3D human pose with unprecedented precision.
Additionally, we introduce a weakly-supervised approach to generate 3D predictions using 2D pose annotations from PedX [1]. This allows for many new opportunities in the field of 3D human pose estimation.

HPERL: 3D Human Pose Estimation from RGB and LiDAR

In machine learning, high-dimensional point clouds are often assumed to be sampled from a topological space of which the intrinsic dimension is significantly lower than the representation dimension. Proximity graphs, such as the Rips graph or kNN graph, are often used as an intermediate representation to learn or visualize topological and geometrical properties of this space. The key idea behind this approach is that distances on the graph preserve the geodesic distances on the unknown space well, and as such, can be used to infer local and global geometric patterns of this space. Prior results provide us with conditions under which these distances are well-preserved for geodesically convex, smooth, compact manifolds. Yet, proximity graphs are ideal representations for a much broader class of spaces, such as metric graphs, i.e., graphs embedded in the Euclidean space. It turns out—as proven in this paper—that these existing conditions cannot be straightforwardly adapted to these spaces. In this work, we provide novel, flexible, and insightful characteristics and results for topological pattern recognition of metric graphs
to bridge this gap.

Graph Approximations to Geodesics on Metric Graphs

We deal with the problem of semantic classification of challenging and highly-cluttered dataset. We present a novel, and yet a very simple classification technique by leveraging the ease of classifiability of any existing well separable dataset for guidance. Since the guide dataset which may or may not have any semantic relationship with the experimental dataset, forms well separable clusters in the feature set, the proposed network tries to embed class-wise features of the challenging dataset to those distinct clusters of the guide set, making them more separable. Depending on the availability, we propose two types of guide sets: one using texture (image) guides and another using prototype vectors representing cluster centers. Experimental results obtained on the challenging benchmark RSSCN, LSUN, and TU-Berlin datasets establish the efficacy of the proposed method as we outperform the existing state-of-the-art techniques by a considerable margin.

GuCNet: A Guided Clustering-based Network for Improved Classification

3D speaker tracking using co-located audio-visual sensors has received much attention recently. Though various methods have been attempted to this field, it is still challenging to obtain a reliable 3D tracking result since the position of co-located sensors are restricted to a small area. In this paper, a novel particle filter (PF) based method is proposed for 3D audio-visual speaker tracking. Compared with traditional PF based audio-visual speaker tracking method, our 3D audio-visual tracker has two main characteristics. In the prediction stage, we use audio-visual information at current frame to further adjust the direction of the particles after the particle state transition process, which can make the particles more concentrated around the speaker direction. In the update stage, the particle likelihood is calculated by fusing both the visual distance and audio-visual direction information. Specially, the distance likelihood is obtained according to the camera projection model and the adaptively estimated size of speaker face or head, and the direction likelihood is determined by audio-visual particle fitness. In this way, the particle likelihood can better represent the speaker presence probability in 3D space. Experimental results show that the proposed tracker outperforms other methods and provides a favorable speaker tracking performance both in 3D space and on the image plane.

3D Audio-Visual Speaker Tracking with A Novel Particle Filter

Pedestrian Attribute Recognition (PAR) has received extensive attention during the past few years. With the advances of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the performance of PAR has been significantly improved. Existing methods tend to acquire attribute-specific features by designing various complex network structures with additional modules. Such additional modules, however, dramatically increase the number of network parameters. Meanwhile, the problems of class imbalance and hard attribute retrieving remain underestimated in PAR. In this paper, we explore the optimization mechanism of the training processing to account for these problems and propose a new loss function called Multi-label Contrastive Focal Loss (MCFL). This proposed MCFL emphasizes the hard and minority attributes by using a separated re-weighting mechanism for different positive and negative classes to alleviate the impact of the imbalance. MCFL is also able to enlarge the gaps between the intra-class of multi-label attributes, to force CNNs to extract more subtle discriminative features. We evaluate the proposed MCFL on three large public pedestrian datasets, including RAP, PA-100K, and PETA. The experimental results indicate that the proposed MCFL with the ResNet-50 backbone is able to outperform other state-of-the-art approaches in comparison.

MCFL:Multi-label Contrastive Focal Loss for Pedestrian Attribute Recognition

Monocular depth estimation is a recurring subject in the field of computer vision. Its ability to describe scenes via a depth map while reducing the constraints related to the formulation of perspective geometry tends to favor its use. However, despite the constant improvement of algorithms, most methods exploit only colorimetric information. Consequently, robustness to events to which the modality is not sensitive to, like specularity or transparency, is neglected. In response to this phenomenon, we propose using polarimetry as an input for a self-supervised monodepth network. Therefore, we propose exploiting polarization cues to encourage accurate reconstruction of scenes. Furthermore, we include a term of polarimetric regularization to state-of-the-art method to take specific advantage of the data. Our method is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrating that the contribution of this new information as well as an enhanced loss function improves depth estimation results, especially for specular areas.

P2D: a self-supervised method for depth estimation from polarimetry


Deep learning-based image understanding techniques require a large number of labeled images for training. Few-shot semantic segmentation, on the contrary, aims at generalizing the segmentation ability of the model to new categories given only a few labeled samples. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel prototypical network (MAPnet) with multiscale feature attention. To fully exploit the representative features of target classes, we firstly extract rich contextual information of labeled support images via a multiscale feature enhancement module. The learned prototypes from support features provide further semantic guidance on the query image. Then we adaptively integrate multiple similarity-guided probability maps by attention mechanism, yielding an optimal pixel-wise prediction. Furthermore, the proposed method was validated on the PASCAL-5i dataset in terms of 1-way N-shot evaluation. We also test the model with weak annotations, including scribble and bounding box annotations. Both the qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the advantages of our approach over other state-of-the-art methods.

Multiscale Attention-Based Prototypical Network For Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation

Fine-grained visual categorization aims to learn a robust image representation modeling subtle differences from similar categories. Existing methods in this ﬁeld tackle the problem by designing complex frameworks, which produce high-level features by performing ﬁrst-order or second-order pooling. Despite the impressive performance achieved by these strategies, the single-ordernetworksonlycarrylinearornon-linearinformation of the last convolutional layer, neglecting the fact that features from different orders are mutually complementary. In this paper, we propose a multi-order feature statistical method (MOFS), whichlearnsﬁne-grainedfeaturescharacterizingmultipleorders. Speciﬁcally, the MOFS consists of two sub-modules: (i) a ﬁrstorder module modeling both mid-level and high-level features. (ii) a covariance feature statistical module capturing high-order features. By deploying these two sub-modules on the top of existing backbone networks, MOFS simultaneously captures multi-level of discriminative patters including local, global and co-related patters. We evaluate the proposed method on three challenging benchmarks, namely CUB-200-2011, Stanford Cars, and FGVC-Aircraft. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, experiment results exhibit superior performance in recognizing ﬁne-grained objects.
