Despite the notable progress made in action recognition tasks, not much work has been done in action recognition specifically for human-robot interaction. In this paper, we deeply explore the characteristics of the action recognition task in interaction scenes and propose an attention-oriented multi-level network framework to meet the need for real-time interaction. Specifically, a Pre-Attention network is employed to roughly focus on the interactor in the scene at low resolution firstly and then perform fine-grained pose estimation at high resolution. The other compact CNN receives the extracted skeleton sequence as input for action recognition, utilizing attention-like mechanisms to capture local spatial-temporal patterns and global semantic information effectively. To evaluate our approach, we construct a new action dataset specially for the recognition task in interaction scenes. Experimental results on our dataset and high efficiency (112 fps at 640 x 480 RGBD) on the mobile computing platform (Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier) demonstrate excellent applicability of our method on action recognition in real-time human-robot interaction.

# Welcome everyone to ACL 2022!

The 60th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics is taking place May 22-27, 2022 as a hybrid event, in Dublin and online. We are happy to welcome all of you to this anniversary edition with an almost 50-50 in-person and virtual participation. 
The main conference program features oral presentations, in-person and virtual posters and demo sessions, a plenary session for our best paper presentations and awards, three amazing keynote events and two new initiatives of invited talks: Spotlight Talks for Young Rising Stars (STIRS) and The Next Big Idea Talks. Posters (including Findings of ACL 2022) and demos are grouped by areas for both the in-person and the virtual sessions. For the virtual component, the talks will be on Zoom and the posters and the demos will be in GatherTown. The Student Research Workshop will have an oral session and a poster session as part of Poster Session 1. The program also features eight Tutorials and 28 Workshops.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems;

In one-class novelty detection, a model learns solely on the in-class data to single out out-class instances. Autoencoder (AE) variants aim to compactly model the in-class data to reconstruct it exclusively, thus differentiating the in-class from out-class by the reconstruction error. However, compact modeling in an improper way might collapse the latent representations of the in-class data and thus their reconstruction, which would lead to performance deterioration. Moreover, to properly measure the reconstruction error of high-dimensional data, a metric is required that captures high-level semantics of the data. To this end, we propose Discriminative Compact AE (DCAE) that learns both compact and collapse-free latent representations of the in-class data, thereby reconstructing them both finely and exclusively. In DCAE, (a) we force a compact latent space to bijectively represent the in-class data by reconstructing them through internal discriminative layers of generative adversarial nets. (b) Based on the deep encoder's vulnerability to open set risk, out-class instances are encoded into the same compact latent space and reconstructed poorly without sacrificing the quality of in-class data reconstruction. (c) In inference, the reconstruction error is measured by a novel metric that computes the dissimilarity between a query and its reconstruction based on the class semantics captured by the internal discriminator. Extensive experiments on public image datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed model on both novelty and adversarial example detection, delivering state-of-the-art performance.

Discriminative Multi-level Reconstruction under Compact Latent Space for One-Class Novelty Detection

Existing CNN-based methods for semantic segmentation heavily depend on multi-scale features to meet the requirements of both semantic comprehension and detail preservation. State-of-the-art segmentation networks widely exploit conventional scale-transfer operations, i.e., up-sampling and down-sampling to learn multi-scale features. In this work, we find that these operations lead to scale-confused features and suboptimal performance because they are spatial-invariant and directly transit all feature information cross scales without spatial selection. To address this issue, we propose the Gated Scale-Transfer Operation (GSTO) to properly transit spatial-filtered features to another scale. Specifically, GSTO can work either with or without extra supervision. Unsupervised GSTO is learned from the feature itself while the supervised one is guided by the supervised probability matrix. Both forms of GSTO are lightweight and plug-and-play, which can be flexibly integrated into networks or modules for learning better multi-scale features. In particular, by plugging GSTO into HRNet, we get a more powerful backbone (namely GSTO-HRNet) for pixel labeling, and it achieves new state-of-the-art results on multiple benchmarks for semantic segmentation including Cityscapes, LIP and Pascal Context, with negligible extra computational cost. Moreover, experiment results demonstrate that GSTO can also significantly boost the performance of multi-scale feature aggregation modules
like PPM and ASPP.

GSTO: Gated Scale-Transfer Operation for Multi-Scale Feature Learning in Semantic Segmentation

Human action recognition using RGB video is a challenging task because the learning of actions is easily affected by the cluttered background. To cope with this problem, the proposed method estimates 3D human poses first which can help remove the cluttered background and focus on the human body. In addition to the human poses, the proposed method also utilizes appearance features nearby the predicted
joints to make our action prediction context-aware. In this talk, we show how we use a two-stream architecture that aggregates the results from skeleton based and appearance-based approaches to do action recognition.

DeepPEAR: Deep Pose Estimation and Action Recognition

Predicting protein-protein interactions (PPIs) by learning informative representations from amino acid sequences is a challenging yet important problem in biology. Although various deep learning models in Siamese architecture have been proposed to model PPIs from sequences, these methods are computationally expensive for a large number of PPIs due to the pairwise encoding process. Furthermore, these methods are difficult to interpret because of non-intuitive mappings from protein sequences to their sequence representation. To address these challenges, we present a novel deep framework to model and predict PPIs from sequence alone. Our model incorporates a bidirectional gated recurrent unit to learn sequence representations by leveraging contextualized and sequential information from sequences. We further employ a sparse regularization to model long-range dependencies between amino acids and to select important amino acids (protein motifs), thus enhancing interpretability. Besides, the novel design of the encoding process makes our model computationally efficient and scalable to an increasing number of interactions. Experimental results on up-to-date interaction datasets demonstrate that our model achieves superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Literature-based case studies illustrate the ability of our model to provide biological insights to interpret the predictions.

Interpretable Structured Learning with Sparse Gated Sequence Encoder for Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction

A common approach in multi-task learning is to encourage the tasks to share a low dimensional representation. This has led to the popular method of trace norm regularization, which has proved effective in many applications. In this paper, we extend this approach by allowing the tasks to partition into different groups, within which trace norm regularization is separately applied. We propose a continuous bilevel optimization framework to simultaneously identify groups of related tasks and learn a low dimensional representation within each group. Hinging on recent results on the derivative of generalized matrix functions, we devise a smooth approximation of the upper-level objective via a dual forward-backward algorithm with Bregman distances. This allows us to solve the bilevel problem by a gradient-based scheme. Numerical experiments on synthetic and benchmark datasets support the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Unveiling groups of related tasks in multi-task learning


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Meta Soft Label Generation for Noisy Labels


We address two long-standing radiogenomic challenges in glioma subtype and survival prediction: (1) how to leverage large amounts of unlabeled magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and (2) how to unite MRI data and genomic data. We propose a novel application of multi-task learning (MTL) that leverages unlabeled MRI data by jointly learning an auxiliary tumor segmentation task with glioma subtype prediction and that can learn from patients with and without genomic data. We analyze multi-parametric MRI data from 542 patients in the combined training, validation, and testing sets of the 2018 Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation Challenge and somatic copy number alteration (SCNA) data from 1090 patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas' (TCGA) lower-grade glioma and glioblastoma projects. Our MTL model significantly outperforms comparable classification models trained only on labeled MRI data for both IDH1/2 mutation and 1p/19q co-deletion subtype prediction tasks. We also show that embeddings produced by our MTL models improve survival predictions beyond MRI or SCNA on their own.

Leveraging Unlabeled Data for Glioma Molecular Subtype and Survival Prediction

Commercially available light field cameras have difficulty in capturing 5D (4D + time) light field videos. They can only capture still light field images or are excessively expensive for normal users to capture the light field video. To tackle this problem, we propose a deep learning-based method for synthesizing a light field video from a monocular video. We propose a new synthetic light field video dataset that renders
photorealistic scenes using Unreal Engine because no light field video dataset is available. The proposed deep learning framework synthesizes the light field video with a full set (99) of sub-aperture images from a normal monocular video. The proposed network consists of three sub-networks, namely, feature extraction, 5D light field video synthesis, and temporal consistency refinement. Experimental results show that our model can successfully synthesize the light field video for synthetic and real scenes and outperforms the previous frame-by-frame method
quantitatively and qualitatively.

5D Light Field Synthesis from a Monocular Video

Batch Normalization (BN) is a well-known technique used in training deep neural networks. The main idea behind batch normalization is to normalize the features of the layers (i:e:, transforming them to have a mean equal to zero and a variance
equal to one). Such a procedure encourages the optimization landscape of the loss function to be smoother, and improves the learning of the networks for both speed and performance. In this paper, we demonstrate that the performance of the network can be improved, if the distributions of the features of the output in the same layer are similar. As normalizing based on mean and variance does not necessarily make the features to have the same distribution, we propose a new normalization scheme: Batch Normalization with Skewness Reduction (BNSR). Comparing with other normalization approaches, BNSR transforms not just only the mean and variance, but also the skewness of the data. By tackling this property of a distribution, we are able to make the output distributions of the layers to be further similar. The nonlinearity of BNSR may further improve the expressiveness of the underlying network. Comparisons with other normalization schemes are tested on the CIFAR-100 and ImageNet datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can outperform other state-of-the-arts that are not equipped with BNSR.

Improving Batch Normalization with Skewness Reduction for Deep Neural Networks

Object shape is a subtle but important factor for object detection. It has been observed that the object-region-percentage (ORP) can be utilized to improve detection accuracy for elongated objects, which have much lower ORPs than other
types of objects. In this paper, we propose an approach to improve the detection performance for objects with high ORPs. Our method consists of three steps. First, we adjust the ground truth bounding boxes of high-ORP objects to an optimal range. Second, we train an object detector, Faster R-CNN, based on adjusted bounding boxes to achieve high recall. Finally, we train a DCNN to learn the adjustment ratios towards four directions and adjust detected bounding boxes of objects to get better localization for higher precision. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method on
12 high-ORP objects in COCO and 8 objects in a proprietary gearbox dataset. The experimental results show that our method can achieve state-of-the-art Performance on these objects while costing less resources in training and inference stages.
