Facial micro-expressions are spontaneous, subtle,
involuntary muscle movements occurring briefly on the face. The
spotting and recognition of these expressions are difficult due to
the subtle behavior, and the time duration of these expressions
is about half a second, which makes it difficult for humans to
identify them. These micro-expressions have many applications in
our daily life, such as in the field of online learning, game playing,
lie detection, and therapy sessions. Traditionally, researchers use
RGB images/videos to spot and classify these micro-expressions,
which pose challenging problems, such as illumination, privacy
concerns and pose variation. The use of depth videos solves these
issues to some extent, as the depth videos are not susceptible to
the variation in illumination. This paper describes the collection
of a first RGB-D dataset for the classification of facial microexpressions
into 6 universal expressions: Anger, Happy, Sad,
Fear, Disgust, and Surprise. This paper shows the comparison
between the RGB and Depth videos for the classification of facial
micro-expressions. Further, a comparison of results shows that
depth videos alone can be used to classify facial micro-expressions
correctly in a decision tree structure by using the traditional and
deep learning approaches with good classification accuracy. The
dataset will be released to the public in the near future.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

Here we present a novel lip-sync framework specially designed for producing a virtual news anchor for a target person. A pair of Temporal Convolutional Networks are used to learn the seq-to-seq mapping from audio signals to mouth movements, followed by a neural rendering model that translates the intermediate face representation to a high-quality appearance. This fully-trainable framework avoids several time-consuming steps in traditional graphics-based methods, meeting the requirements of many low-delay applications.

A Neural Lip-Sync Framework for Synthesizing Photorealistic Virtual News Anchors

Coronavirus (Covid-19) is spreading fast, infecting people through contact in various forms including droplets from sneezing and coughing. Therefore, the detection of infected subjects in an early, quick and cheap manner is urgent. Currently available tests are scarce and limited to people in danger of serious illness. The application of deep learning to chest X-ray images for Covid-19 detection is an attractive approach. However, this technology usually relies on the availability of large labelled datasets, a requirement hard to meet in the context of a virus outbreak. To overcome this challenge, a semi-supervised deep learning model using both labelled and unlabelled data is proposed. We developed and tested a semi-supervised deep learning framework based on the Mix Match architecture to classify chest X-rays into Covid-19, pneumonia and healthy cases. The presented approach was calibrated using two publicly available datasets. The results show an accuracy increase of around $15\%$ under low labelled / unlabelled data ratio. This indicates that our semi-supervised framework can help improve performance levels towards Covid-19 detection when the amount of high-quality labelled data is scarce. Also, we introduce a semi-supervised deep learning boost coefficient which is meant to ease the scalability of our approach and performance comparison.

Dealing with Scarce Labelled Data: Semi-supervised Deep Learning with Mix Match for Covid-19 Detection Using Chest X-ray Images

The high susceptibility of deep learning algorithms against structured and unstructured perturbations has motivated the development of efficient adversarial defense algorithms. However, the lack of generalizability of existing defense algorithms and the high variability in the performance of the attack algorithms for different databases raises several questions on the effectiveness of the defense algorithms. In this research, we aim to design a defense model that is robust within a certain bound against both seen and unseen adversarial attacks. This bound is related to the visual appearance of an image, and we termed it as \textit{Visual Imperceptible Bound (VIB)}. To compute this bound, we propose a novel method that uses the database characteristics. The VIB is further used to measure the effectiveness of attack algorithms. The performance of the proposed defense model is evaluated on the MNIST, CIFAR-10, and Tiny ImageNet databases on multiple attacks that include C\&W ($l_2$) and DeepFool. The proposed defense model is not only able to increase the robustness against several attacks but also retain or improve the classification accuracy on an original clean test set. The proposed algorithm is attack agnostic, i.e. it does not require any knowledge of the attack algorithm.

Attack Agnostic Adversarial Defense via Visual Imperceptible Bound


Satellite Image Time Series (SITS), MRI sequences, and more generally image time series, constitute 2D+t data providing spatial and temporal information about an observed scene. Given a pattern recognition task such as image classification, considering jointly such rich information is crucial during the decision process. Nevertheless, due to the complex representation of the data-cube, spatio-temporal features extraction from 2D+t data remains difficult to handle. We present in this article an approach to learn such features from this data, and then to proceed to their classification. Our strategy consists in enriching pixel time series with spatial information. It is based on Random Walk to build a novel segment-based representation of the data, passing from a 2D+t dimension to a 2D one, without loosing too much spatial information. Such new representation is then involved in an end-to-end learning process with a classical 2D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in order to learn spatio-temporal features for the classification of image time series. Our approach is evaluated on a remote sensing application for the mapping of agricultural crops. Thanks to a visual attention mechanism, the proposed 2D spatio-temporal representation makes also easier the interpretation of a SITS to understand spatio-temporal phenomenons related to soil management practices.

Classification of spatially enriched pixel time series with convolutional neural networks

Presentation attacks are posing major challenges to most of the biometric modalities. Iris recognition, which is considered as one of the most accurate biometric modality for person identification, has also been shown to be vulnerable to advanced presentation attacks such as 3D contact lenses and textured lens. While in the literature, several presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithms are presented; a significant limitation is the generalizability against an unseen database, unseen sensor, and different imaging environment. To address this challenge, we propose a generalized deep learning-based PAD network, MVANet, which utilizes multiple representation layers. It is inspired by the simplicity and success of hybrid algorithm or fusion of multiple detection networks. The computational complexity is an essential factor in training deep neural networks; therefore, to reduce the computational complexity while learning multiple feature representation layers, a fixed base model has been used. The performance of the proposed network is demonstrated on multiple databases such as IIITD-WVU MUIPA and IIITD-CLI databases under cross-database training-testing settings, to assess the generalizability of the proposed algorithm.

Generalized Iris Presentation Attack Detection Algorithm under Cross-Database Settings

It is widely shown that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial examples on most recognition tasks, such as image classiﬁcation and segmentation. However, few work studies the more complicated task – 3D human pose estimation. This task often requires large-scale datasets, specialized network architectures, and it can be solved either from single-view RGB images or from multi-view RGB images. In this paper, we make the ﬁrst attempt to investigate the robustness of current state-of-the-art 3D human pose estimation methods. To this end, we build four representative baseline models, where most of the current methods can be generally classiﬁed as one of them. Furthermore, we design targeted adversarial attacks to detect whether 3D pose estimators are robust to different camera parameters. For different types of methods, we present a comprehensive study of their robustness on the large-scale Human3.6M benchmark. Our work shows that different methods vary signiﬁcantly in their resistance to adversarial attacks. Through extensive experiments, we show that multi-view 3D pose estimators can be more vulnerable to adversarial examples. We believe that our efforts can shed light on future works to design more robust 3D human pose estimators.

On the Robustness of 3D Human Pose Estimation

Recently, deep convolutional neural networks have been extensively applied into image deblurring and have achieved remarkable performance. However, most CNN-based image deblurring methods focus on simply increasing network depth, neglecting the contextual information of the blurred image and the reconstructed image. Meanwhile, most encoder-decoder based methods rarely exploit encoder’s multi-layer features. To address these issues, we propose a bi-attention neural network for single image deblurring, which mainly consists of a bi-attention network and a feature fusion network. Specifically, two crisscross attention modules are plugged before and after the encoderdecoder to capture long-range spatial contextual information in the blurred image and the reconstructed image simultaneously, and the feature fusion network combines multi-layer features from encoder to enable the decoder reconstruct the image with multi-scale features. The whole network is end-to-end trainable. Quantitative and qualitative experiment results validate that the proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of PSNR and SSIM on benchmark datasets.

Single Image Deblurring Using Bi-Attention Network

We present Detective – an attentive object detector that identifies objects in images in a sequential manner. Our network is based on an encoder-decoder architecture, where the encoder is a convolutional neural network, and the decoder is a convolutional recurrent neural network coupled with an attention mechanism. At each iteration, our decoder focuses on the relevant parts of the image using an attention mechanism, and then estimates the object’s class and the bounding box coordinates. Current object detection models generate dense predictions and rely on post-processing to remove duplicate predictions. Detective is a sparse object detector that generates a single bounding box per object instance. However, training a sparse object detector is challenging, as it requires the model to reason at the instance level and not just at the class and spatial levels. We propose a training mechanism based on the Hungarian algorithm and a loss that balances the localization and classification tasks. This allows Detective to achieve promising results on the PASCAL VOC dataset for object detection. Our experiments demonstrate that sparse object detection is possible and has great potential for future developments in applications where the order of the desired objects is of interest.

Detective: An Attentive Recurrent Model for Sparse Object Detection


Asynchronization issue caused by different types of modalities is one of the major problems in audio visual speech recognition (AVSR) research. However, most AVSR systems merely rely on up sampling of video or down sampling of audio to align audio and visual features, assuming that the feature sequences are aligned frame-by-frame. These pre-processing steps oversimplify the asynchrony relation between acoustic signal and lip motion, lacking flexibility and impairing the performance of the system. Although there are systems modeling the asynchrony between the modalities, sometimes they fail to align speech and video precisely over some even all noisy conditions. In this paper, we propose a mutual feature alignment method for AVSR which can make full use of cross modility information to address the asynchronization issue by introducing Mutual Iterative Attention (MIA) mechanism. Our method can automatically learn an alignment in a mutual way by performing mutual attention iteratively between the audio and visual features, relying on the modified encoder structure of Transformer. Experimental results show that our proposed method obtains absolute improvements up to 20.42% over the audio modality alone depending upon the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) level. Better recognition performance can also be achieved comparing with the traditional feature concatenation method under both clean and noisy conditions. It is expectable that our proposed mutual feature alignment method can be easily generalized to other multimodal tasks with semantically correlated information.

Mutual Alignment between Audiovisual Features for End-to-End Audiovisual Speech Recognition


In recent years optical flow is often estimated to reuse features so as to accelerate video semantic segmentation. With the addition of optical flow network, however, the extra cost may incur and accuracy may thus be degraded because of repeated warping operation. In this paper, we propose a boundary-aware distillation network (BDNet) that replaces the optical flow network with block motion vectors encoded in compressed video, resulting in negligible computational complexity. In order to make salient features, an auxiliary boundary-aware stream is added to the main stream to jointly estimate silhouette and segmentation of objects. To further correct warped features, a well-trained teacher network is employed to transfer knowledge to the main stream. Both boundary-aware stream and the teacher network are neglected during the inference stage, so that video segmentation network enables to get faster without increasing any computational burden. By splitting the task into three components, our BDNet shows almost 10% time saving as well as 1.6% accuracy improvement over baseline on the Cityscapes dataset.
