In the last decade the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in many fields like image processing or speech recognition has become a common practice because of their effectiveness to solve complex tasks. However, in such a rush, very little attention has been paid to security aspects. In this work we explore the possibility to embed a watermark into the ANN parameters.
We exploit model redundancy and adaptation capacity to lock a subset of its parameters to carry the watermark sequence. The watermark can be extracted in a simple way to claim copyright on models but can be very easily attacked with model fine-tuning.
To tackle this culprit we devise a novel watermark aware training strategy. We aim at delving into the loss landscape to find an optimal configuration of the parameters such that we are robust to fine-tuning attacks towards the watermarked parameters.
Our experimental results on classical ANN models trained on well-known MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets show that the proposed approach makes the embedded watermark robust to fine-tuning and compression attacks.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program. 


Despite recent emerging research attention, 3D hand pose estimation still suffers from the problems of predicting inaccurate or invalid poses which conflict with physical and kinematic constraints. To address these problems, we propose a novel 3D hand pose estimation adversarial network (PEAN) which can implicitly utilize such constraints to regularize the prediction in an adversarial learning framework. PEAN contains two parts: a 3D hierarchical estimation network (3DHNet) to
predict hand pose, which decouples the task into multiple subtasks with a hierarchical structure; a pose discrimination network (PDNet) to judge the reasonableness of the estimated 3D hand pose, which back-propagates the constraints to the estimation network. During the adversarial learning process, PDNet is expected to distinguish the estimated 3D hand pose and the ground truth, while 3DHNet is expected to estimate more valid pose to confuse PDNet. In this way, 3DHNet is capable of generating 3D poses with accurate positions and adaptively adjusting the invalid poses without additional prior knowledge.
Experiments show that the proposed 3DHNet does a good job in predicting hand poses, and introducing PDNet to 3DHNet does further improve the accuracy and reasonableness of the predicted results. As a result, the proposed PEAN achieves the state-of-theart performance on three public hand pose estimation datasets.

PEAN: 3D Hand Pose Estimation Adversarial Network

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in building video summarization tools, where the goal is to automatically create a short summary of an input video that properly represents the original content. We formulate the task of video summarization as an optimization problem with a knapsack-like constraint on the total summary duration. We present ILS-SUMM, a novel video summarization algorithm to solve the subset selection problem under the knapsack constraint. Our algorithm is based on the well-known metaheuristic optimization framework - Iterated Local Search (ILS), known for its ability to avoid weak local minima and obtain a good near-global minimum. Extensive experiments show that our method finds solutions with significantly better total distance than previous methods. Moreover, to indicate the high scalability of ILS-SUMM, we introduce a new dataset consisting of videos of various lengths.

ILS-SUMM: Iterated Local Search for Unsupervised video summarization


Snapshot hyperspectral imaging can capture the 3D hyperspectral image (HSI) with a single 2D measurement and has attracted increasing attention recently. Recovering the underlying HSI from the compressive measurement is an ill-posed problem and exploiting the image prior is essential for solving this ill-posed problem. However, existing reconstruction methods always start from modeling image prior with the 1D vector or 2D matrix and cannot fully exploit the structurally spectral-spatial nature in 3D HSI, thus leading to a poor fidelity. In this paper, we propose an effective high-order tensor optimization based method to boost the reconstruction fidelity for snapshot hyperspectral imaging. We first build high-order tensors by exploiting the spatial-spectral correlation in HSI. Then, we propose a weight high-order singular value regularization (WHOSVR) based low-rank tensor recovery model to characterize the structure prior of HSI. By integrating the structure prior in WHOSVR with the system imaging process, we develop an optimization framework for HSI reconstruction, which is finally solved via the alternating minimization algorithm. Extensive experiments implemented on two representative systems demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Snapshot Hyperspectral Imaging Based on Weighted High-order Singular Value Regularization


In this paper, a multi-task learning framework has been proposed for solving and improving traditional Mongolian words recognition. To be specific, a sequence-to-sequence model with attention mechanism was utilized to accomplish the task
of recognition. Therein, the attention mechanism is designed to fulfill the task of glyph segmentation during the process of recognition. Although the glyph segmentation is an implicit operation, the information of glyph segmentation can be integrated into the process of recognition. After that, the two tasks can be accomplished simultaneously under the framework of multi-task learning. By this way, adjacent image frames can be decoded into a glyph more precisely, which results in improving not only the performance of words recognition but also the accuracy of character segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed multi-task learning based scheme outperforms the conventional glyph segmentation-based method and various segmentation-free (i.e. holistic recognition) methods.

Multi-Task Learning Based Traditional Mongolian Words Recognition


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Seasonal Inhomogeneous Nonconsecutive Arrival Process Search and Evaluation


The cross-media hash retrieval method is to encode multimedia data into a common binary hash space, which can effectively measure the correlation between samples from different modalities. In order to further improve the retrieval accuracy, this paper proposes an unsupervised cross-media hash retrieval method based on multi-head attention network. First of all, we use a multi-head attention network to make better matching images and texts, which contains rich semantic information. At the same time, an auxiliary similarity matrix is constructed to integrate the original neighborhood information from different modalities. Therefore, this method can capture the potential correlations between different modalities and within the same modality, so as to make up for the differences between different modalities and within the same modality. Secondly, the method is unsupervised and does not require additional semantic labels, so it has the potential to achieve large-scale cross-media retrieval.In addition, batch normalization and replacement hash code generation functions are adopted to optimize the model, and two loss functions are designed, which make the performance of this method exceed many supervised deep cross-media hash methods. Experiments on three datasets show that the average performance of this method is about 5 to 6 percentage points higher than the state-of-the-art unsupervised method, which proves the effectiveness and superiority of this method.

Cross-media Hash Retrieval using Multi-head Attention Network

With this work we tackle immunofluorescence classification in renal biopsy, employing state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Networks. In this setting, the aim of the probabilistic model is to assist an expert practitioner towards identifying the location pattern of antibody deposits within a glomerulus. Since modern neural networks often provide overconfident outputs, we stress the importance of having a reliable prediction, demonstrating that Temperature Scaling (TS), a recently introduced re-calibration technique, can be successfully applied to immunofluorescence classification in renal biopsy. Experimental results demonstrate that the designed model yields good accuracy on the specific task, and that TS is able to provide reliable probabilities, which are highly valuable for such a task given the low inter-rater agreement.

Confidence Calibration for Deep Renal Biopsy Immunofluorescence Image Classification


We propose a novel color image descriptor named Holistic and Hierarchical Order-Encoding Patterns (H2OEP) for texture classification. In H2OEP, the holistic order-encoding pattern compactly encodes color order variation tendencies for each pixel in color space. The hierarchical order-encoding pattern leverages min ordering, median ordering and max ordering to encode local neighboring relationships across different color channels. Finally, the generated order-encoding patterns are aggregated via central pixel encoding to build 3D joint histograms for image representation. Experiments on four benchmark texture databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed descriptor for color texture classification.

Color Texture Description Based on Holistic and Hierarchical Order-Encoding Patterns

In this presentation we present a summary of our work on developing a specialized hardware architecture able to execute a novel deep convolutional neural network for stereo estimation in real time. We present the problem of computation complexity and propose step-by-step the development of an efficient, optimized and scalable hardware architecture to be implemented on an FPGA platform.

Porting a Convolutional Neural Network for Stereo Vision to Hardware

Adversarial Training (AT) and Virtual Adversarial Training (VAT) are the regularization techniques that train Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) with adversarial examples. In this paper, we propose xAT and xVAT that generate \textbf{multiplicative} perturbations to input examples for robust training of DNNs. Such perturbations are much more perceptible and interpretable than their \textbf{additive} counterparts exploited by AT and VAT. Furthermore, the multiplicative perturbations can be generated transductively or inductively while the standard AT and VAT only support a transductive implementation. We conduct a series of experiments that analyze the behavior of the multiplicative perturbations and demonstrate that xAT and xVAT can achieve competitive classification accuracies across multiple established benchmarks while being about 30\% faster than their additive counterparts. Furthermore, the resulting DNNs also demonstrate distinct weight distributions.
