Dense pixel matching is required for many computer vision algorithms such as disparity, optical flow or scene flow estimation. Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) have proven to be a suitable feature extractor for CNN-based dense matching tasks. FPN generates well localized and semantically strong features at multiple scales. However, the generic FPN is not utilizing its full potential, due to its reasonable but limited localization accuracy. Thus, we present ResFPN - a multi-resolution feature pyramid network with multiple residual skip connections, where at any scale, we leverage the information from higher resolution maps for stronger and better localized features. In our ablation study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our novel architecture with clearly higher accuracy than FPN. In addition, we verify the superior accuracy of ResFPN in many different pixel matching applications on established datasets like KITTI, Sintel, and FlyingThings3D.

The 37th Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI 2021) is held fully online. The main conference is single-track and each paper is show-cased with a live component (either a live discussion and Q&A, or a live lightning talk). All papers are also featured in video presentations and in poster sessions in gather.town. The three parallel workshops on Friday allow for smaller meetings on current topics.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. Video captioning is a challenging task which aims at automatically generating a natural language description of a given video. Recent researches have shown that exploiting the intrinsic multi-modalities of videos significantly promotes captioning performance. However, how to integrate multi-modalities to generate effective semantic representations for video captioning is still an open issue. Some researchers proposed to learn multimodal features in parallel during the encoding stage. The downside of these methods lies in the neglect of the interaction among multi-modalities and their rich contextual information. In this study, inspired by the fact that visual contents are generally more important for comprehending videos, we propose a novel Visual Oriented Encoder (VOE) to integrate multimodal features in an interactive manner. Specifically, VOE is designed as a hierarchical structure, where bottom layers are utilized to extract multi-scale contexts from auxiliary modalities while the top layer is exploited to generate joint representations by considering both visual and contextual information. Following the encoder-decoder framework, we systematically develop a VOE-LSTM model and evaluate it on two mainstream benchmarks: MSVD and MSR-VTT. Experimental results show that the proposed VOE surpasses conventional encoders and our VOE-LSTM model achieves competitive results compared with state-of-the-art approaches.

Visual Oriented Encoder: Integrating Multimodal and Multi-Scale Contexts for Video Captioning

Few-shot learning is a machine learning problem in which new categories are learned from only a few samples. One approach for few-shot learning is metric learning, which learns an embedding space in which learning is efficient for few-shot samples. In this paper, we focus on metric learning and demonstrate that the number of classes in the training data used for metric learning has a greater impact on the accuracy of few-shot learning than the number of samples per class. We propose a few-shot learning approach based on metric learning in which the number of classes in the training data for performing metric learning is increased. The number of classes is augmented by synthesizing samples of imaginary classes at a feature level from the original training data. The proposed method is evaluated on the miniImageNet dataset using the nearest neighbor method or a support vector machine as the classifier, and the effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated.

Few-Shot Learning Based on Metric Learning Using Class Augmentation


Considering the fact that a license plate (LP) can only generate
perspective distortion in the image due to its rigid feature, in
this paper we propose a novel perspective rectification network
(PRN) to automatically estimate the perspective transformation
and rectify the distorted LP accordingly. For recognition, we
propose a location-aware 2D attention based recognition network
that is capable of recognizing both single-line and double-line
plates with perspective deformation. The rectification network
and recognition network are connected for end-to-end training.
Experiments on common datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

2D License Plate Recognition based on Automatic Perspective Rectification


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Automatic Classification of Human Granulosa Cells in Assisted Reproductive Technology using vibrational spectroscopy imaging

Object detection in remote sensing images is a challenging task due to objects in the bird-view perspective appearing with arbitrary orientations. Though considerable progress has been made, there still exist challenges with the interference from complex backgrounds, dense arrangement, and large-scale variations. In this paper, we propose an oriented detector named Cascade Saliency Attention Network (CSAN), designed for comprehensively suppressing interference in remote sensing images. Specifically, we first combine context and pixel attention on feature maps to enhance saliency of objects for suppressing interference from backgrounds. Then, in cascade network, we apply instance segmentation on ROI to increase saliency of the central object, thus preventing object features from mutual interference in dense arrangement. Additionally, to alleviate large-scale variations, we devise a multi-scale merge module during FPN merging process to learn richer scale representations. Experimental results on DOTA and HRSC2016 datasets outperform other state-of-the-art object detection methods and verify the effectiveness of our method.

Cascade Saliency Attention Network for Object Detection in Remote Sensing Images

Network pruning is widely used to compress Deep
Neural Networks (DNNs). The Soft Filter Pruning (SFP) method zeroizes the pruned filters during training while updating them in the next training epoch. Thus the trained information of the pruned filters is completely dropped. To utilize the trained pruned filters, we proposed a SofteR Filter Pruning (SRFP) method and its variant, Asymptotic SofteR Filter Pruning (ASRFP), simply decaying the pruned weights with a monotonic decreasing parameter. Our methods perform well across various networks, datasets and pruning rates, also transferable to weight pruning. On ILSVRC-2012, ASRFP prunes 40% of the parameters on ResNet-34 with 1.63% top-1 and 0.68% top-5 accuracy improvement. In theory, SRFP and ASRFP are an incremental regularization of the pruned filters. Besides, We note that SRFP and ASRFP pursue better results while slowing down the speed of convergence.

Softer Pruning, Incremental Regularization

Images represent a commonly used form of visual communication among people. Nevertheless, image classification may be a challenging task when dealing with unclear or non-common images needing more context to be correctly annotated. Metadata accompanying images on social-media represent an ideal source of additional information for retrieving proper neighborhoods easing image annotation task. To this end, we blend visual features extracted from neighbors and their metadata to jointly leverage context and visual cues. Our models use multiple semantic embeddings to achieve the dual objective of being robust to vocabulary changes between train and test sets and decoupling the architecture from the low-level metadata representation. Convolutional and recurrent neural networks (CNNs-RNNs) are jointly adopted to infer similarity among neighbors and query images. We perform comprehensive experiments on the NUS-WIDE dataset showing that our models outperform state-of-the-art architectures based on images and metadata, and decrease both sensory and semantic gaps to better annotate images.

A CNN-RNN Framework for Image Annotation from Visual Cues and Social Network Metadata


In this paper, we consider a task of stopping the video stream recognition process of a text field, in which each frame is recognized independently and the individual results are combined together. The video stream recognition stopping problem is an under-researched topic with regards to computer vision, but its relevance for building high-performance video recognition systems is clear.
Firstly, we describe an existing method of optimally stopping such a process based on a modelling of the next combined result. Then, we describe approximations and assumptions which allowed us to build an optimized computation scheme and thus obtain a method with reduced computational complexity. 
The methods were evaluated for the tasks of document text field recognition and arbitrary text recognition in a video. The experimental comparison shows that the introduced approximations do not diminish the quality of the stopping method in terms of the achieved combined result precision, while dramatically reducing the time required to make the stopping decision. The results were consistent for both text recognition tasks.

Fast Approximate Modelling of the Next Combination Result for Stopping the Text Recognition in a Video

Subspace clustering refers to the problem of clustering high-dimensional data into a union of low-dimensional subspaces. Current subspace clustering approaches are usually based on a two-stage framework. In the first stage, an affinity matrix is generated from data. In the second one, spectral clustering is applied on the affinity matrix. However, the affinity matrix produced by two-stage methods cannot fully reveal the similarity between data points from the same subspace, resulting in inaccurate clustering. Besides, most approaches fail to solve large-scale clustering problems due to poor efficiency. In this paper, we first propose a new scalable sparse method called Iterative Maximum Correlation (IMC) to learn the affinity matrix from
data. Then we develop Piecewise Correlation Estimation (PCE) to densify the intra-subspace similarity produced by IMC. Finally we extend our work into a Sparse-Dense Subspace Clustering (SDSC) framework with a dense stage to optimize the affinity matrix for two-stage methods. We show that IMC is efficient for large-scale tasks, and PCE ensures better performance for IMC. We show the universality of our SDSC framework for current two-stage methods as well. Experiments on benchmark data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches.

Sparse-Dense Subspace Clustering

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are powerful but computationally demanding and memory intensive, thus impeding their practical applications on resource-constrained hardware. Filter pruning is an efficient approach for deep CNN compression and acceleration, which aims to eliminate some ﬁlters with tolerable performance degradation. In the literature, the majority of approaches prune networks by defining the redundant filters or training the networks with a sparsity prior loss function. These approaches mainly use FLOPs as their speed metric. However, the inference latency of pruned networks cannot be directly controlled on the hardware platform, which is an important dimension of practicality. To address this issue, we propose a novel Hardware-aware Filter Pruning method (HFP) which can produce pruned networks that satisfy the actual latency budget on the hardwares of interest. In addition, we propose an iterative pruning framework called Opti-Trim to decrease the accuracy degradation of pruning process and accelerate the pruning procedure whilst meeting the hardware budget. More specifically, HFP first builds up a lookup table for fast estimating the latency of target network about filter configuration layer by layer. Then, HFP leverages information gain (IG) to globally evaluate the filters contribution to network output distribution. HFP utilizes the Opti-Trim framework to globally prune filters with the minimum IG one by one until the latency budget is satisfied. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet.
