The manifold hypothesis suggests that word vectors live on a submanifold within
their ambient vector space. We argue that we should, more accurately, expect
them to live on a pinched manifold: a singular quotient of a manifold obtained
by identifying some of its points. The identified, singular points correspond to
polysemous words, i.e. words with multiple meanings. Our point of view suggests
that monosemous and polysemous words can be distinguished based on the topology
of their neighbourhoods. We present two kinds of empirical evidence to support
this point of view:

(1) We introduce a topological measure of polysemy based on persistent homology
that correlates well with the actual number of meanings of a word.

(2) We propose a simple, topologically motivated solution to the SemEval-2010
task on Word Sense Induction &amp; Disambiguation that produces competitive results.

Often grouped within the field of artificial intelligence, but actually pre-dating the development of artificial intelligence, advances in computational linguistics and natural language processing are now some of the major drivers behind the use of artificial intelligence for commercial and social applications – for example, on-line search, machine translation and with voice-assisted conversational devices.

First established in 1965, the biennial COLING conference is held in diverse parts of the globe and attracts participants from both top-ranked research centers and emerging countries. Today, the most important developments in our field are taking place not only in universities and academic research institutes, but also in industrial research departments and in technological startups. COLING conferences provide opportunities for all these communities to showcase their exciting developments.

Explanation generation introduced as the world tree corpus (Jansen et .al., 2018) is an emerging NLP task involving multi-hop inference for explaining the correct answer in multiple-choice QA. It is a challenging task evidenced by low state-of-the-art performances(below 60% in F-score) demonstrated on the task. Of the state-of-the-art approaches, fine-tuned transformer-based (Vaswani et al., 2017)BERT models have shown great promise toward continued system performance improvements compared with approaches relying on surface-level cues alone that demonstrate performance saturation. In this work, we take a novel direction by addressing a particular linguistic characteristic of the data—we intro-duce a novel and lightweight focus feature in the transformer-based model and examine task improvements. Our evaluations reveal a significantly positive impact of this lightweight focus feature achieving the highest scores, second only to a significantly computationally intensive system.

Fine-tuning BERT with Focus Words for Explanation Regeneration

Tackling Natural Language Inference with a logic-based method is becoming less and less common. While this might have been counterintuitive several decades ago, nowadays it seems pretty obvious. The main reasons for such a conception are that (a) logic-based methods are usually brittle when it comes to processing wide-coverage texts, and (b) instead of automatically learning from data, they require much of manual effort for development. We make a step towards to overcome such shortcomings by modeling learning from data as abduction: reversing a theorem-proving procedure to abduce semantic relations that serve as the best explanation for the gold label of an inference problem. In other words, instead of proving sentence-level inference relations with the help of lexical relations, the lexical relations are proved taking into account the sentence-level inference relations.
We implement the learning method in a tableau theorem prover for natural language and show that it improves the performance of the theorem prover on the SICK dataset by 1.4% while still maintaining high precision (>94%). The obtained results are competitive with the state of the art among logic-based systems.

Learning as Abduction: Trainable Natural Logic Theorem Prover for Natural Language Inference

Operationalizing morality is crucial for understanding multiple aspects of society that have moral values at their core – such as riots, mobilizing movements, public debates, etc. Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) has become one of the most adopted theories of morality partly due to its accompanying lexicon, the Moral Foundation Dictionary (MFD), which offers a base for computationally dealing with morality. In this work, we exploit the MFD in a novel direction by investigating how well moral values are captured by KGs. We explore three widely used KGs, and provide conceptlevel analogues for the MFD. Furthermore, we propose several Personalized PageRank variations in order to score all the concepts and entities in the KGs with respect to their relevance to the different moral values. Our promising results help to progress the operationalization of morality in both NLP and KG communities.

Knowledge Graphs meet Moral Values

Learning on large text corpora, deep neural networks achieve promising results in the next word prediction task. However, deploying these huge models on devices has to deal with constraints of low latency and a small binary size. To address these challenges, we propose a fast word predictor performing efficiently on mobile devices. Compared with a standard neural network which has a similar word prediction rate, the proposed model obtains 60% reduction in memory size and 100X faster inference time on a middle-end mobile device. The method is developed as a feature for a chat application which serves more than 100 million users.

Fast Word Predictor for On-Device Application

We present an end-to-end information retrieval system with domain-specific custom language models for accurate search terms expansion. The text mining pipeline tackles several challenges faced in an industry-setting, including multi-lingual jargon-rich unstructured text and privacy compliance. Combined with a novel statistical approach for word embedding evaluations, the models can be monitored in a production setting. Our approach is used in the real world in risk management in the financial sector and has wide applicability to other domains.

Semantic search with domain-specific word-embedding and production monitoring in Fintech

We demonstrate the functionalities of the new user interface for CogniVal. CogniVal is a framework for the cognitive evaluation of English word embeddings, which evaluates the quality of the embeddings based on their performance to predict human lexical representations from cognitive language processing signals from various sources. In this demo, we present an easy-to-use command line interface for CogniVal with multiple improvements over the original work, including the possibility to evaluate custom embeddings against custom cognitive data sources.

CogniVal in Action: An Interface for Customizable Cognitive Word Embedding Evaluation

This paper presents M-GAAMA, a Multilingual Question Answering architecture and demo system. This is the first multilingual machine reading comprehension (MRC) demo which is able to answer questions in over 100 languages. M-GAAMA answers questions from a given passage in the same or different language. It incorporates several existing multilingual models that can be used interchangeably in the demo such as M-BERT and XLM-R. The M-GAAMA demo also improves language accessibility by incorporating the IBM Watson machine translation widget to provide additional capabilities to the user to see an answer in their desired language. We also show how M-GAAMA can be used in downstream tasks by incorporating it into an END-TO-END-QA system using CFO (Chakravarti et al., 2019). We experiment with our system architecture on the Multi-Lingual Question Answering (MLQA) and the COVID-19 CORD (Wang et al., 2020; Tang et al., 2020) datasets to provide insights into the performance of the system.

A Multilingual Reading Comprehension System for more than 100 Languages

Advances in Natural Language Inference (NLI) have helped us understand what state-of-the-art models really learn and what their generalization power is. Recent research has revealed some heuristics and biases of these models. However, to date, there is no systematic effort to capitalize on those insights through a system that uses these to explain the NLI decisions. To this end, we propose XplaiNLI, an eXplainable, interactive, visualization interface that computes NLI with different methods and provides explanations for the decisions made by the different approaches.

XplaiNLI: Explainable Natural Language Inference through Visual Analytics

Teaching collaborative argumentation is an advanced skill that many K-12 teachers struggle to develop. To address this, we have developed Discussion Tracker, a classroom discussion analytics system based on novel algorithms for classifying argument moves, specificity, and collaboration. Results from a classroom deployment indicate that teachers found the analytics useful, and that the underlying classifiers perform with moderate to substantial agreement with humans.

Discussion Tracker: Supporting Teacher Learning about Students' Collaborative Argumentation in High School Classrooms

In this presentation, I will briefly talk about the goals of our interface, challenges in Arabic NLP and how we overcame those challenges. I will also show you how to navigate our interface.
